I am a Certified Health Education Specialist with the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing. I have two Bachelors degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A Bachelors of Science Public Health and a Bachelors of Art in Anthropology.I am a non-profit healthcare worker, dog mom, digital artist, mental health advocate, volunteer, gamer, and friend.
How Did I Get Started?

It was an on-going joke in my family that I could not go anywhere without a coloring book of some sort, and I would often go up to strangers at restaurants and ask what they’d pay for my pristine drawing of Spongebob Squarepants.

I don’t know if this bargaining tactic comes from growing up in a family of car sales representatives, but most people couldn’t resist the serious efforts of a 5-year-old looking to create a customer. I was an anxious child (spoiler alert - I am now an anxious adult) and I spent a lot of time drawing to help relax my introverted self. Although I have always presented as an outgoing person, I am an introvert at heart!

Fast-forward to my teenage years, I continued drawing but became more critical of my art. I took advanced drawing courses in my public school, but I often kept sketches to myself. I was very self conscious at this point, and gave up on trying new styles all through college. I kept to doodling in my notebooks and painting with acrylic paints occasionally.It wasn’t until 2018, a whole year after I graduated, that I decided to give it another shot.

By now, I had my first job where I could barely afford an iPad and Apple pencil . My husband had always encouraged my creative development and convinced me to give it a try. But alas, I hated everything I drew and was frustrated with myself for trying something new after all this time. I gave up for a few years again and stuck to acrylic painting.

During the Quarantine Era of 2020, I started working a non-profit organization that required me to learn basic graphics design. Intimidated at first, I leapt at the opportunity to learn something new (for free) and discovered that I absolutely loved it! My brother is a brilliant graphics designer, and I never thought to ask for his help to learn the skill myself. To practice my designs, I decided to create an instagram account to help others cope with their mental health. This is how @crankycranium began.

After a month and a half of using Canva and meeting so many digital artists on Instagram, I was inspired to attempt digital drawing one more time… and that was it. Since then, I have drawn every single post you will find on my Instagram page. I am not ashamed to say I use free stock photos to help me with outlines at times, or even for color inspiration in a drawing - but I see my art journey as a marathon, not a sprint. I have learned that there is no wrong way to create art (unless you are obviously stealing other artist’s work or ideas!) and so I choose to finish every piece I start. I don’t talk myself out of trying, and that has been the greatest gift I have ever given to myself. If you tried something in the past and it didn’t work out the first time, I highly encourage that you revisit it without judgment. You will be surprised where you end up.
